Social Justice, Social Media, and Family Medicine

Thanks to everyone who attended our session today. As promised, the slides from our presentation are below. You can download these from my slideshare site. In addition, below are the tweets associated with our session. Also check out my storify account for other tweets from meetings. In the AM Session, we had four AAFP Board members attend including the AAFP President himself. In the PM Session, we had standing room only and lots of tweeting going on. I also recorded some video which I hope to post soon. Thanks again for showing us some love today!

#AAFPNC 2012: Day One

So, it begins today - The 2012 AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students. The conference theme this year is "Social Justice & Family Medicine: Turning Advocacy Into Action." My first time here was about 15 years ago. My friend and colleague Dr. Deb Clements tweeted out yesterday "About to begin my 19th National Conference." Lots of great memories here for me. I wrote this post in 2010.

The featured speaker today is Gloria Wilder, MD, MPH who will be at today's Opening Session at 10am Central Time. She is president & CEO of Core Health, a company she founded to advance community wellness and economic development. She is also founder of Justice Speaks, a nonprofit organization dedicated to facilitating nationwide dialogue on issues of social justice and equality.

I'm going to be co-presenting with Family Physician Dr. Jay Lee at 11am Central Time on Social Justice, Social Media, and Family Medicine. There is a preview video below on this. In addition, there is a preview video on an FMIG session today. And, there is a segment from last week's Family Medicine Rocks podcast with Resident Chair Dr. Kevin Bernstein. In this video segment, he talks about why students and residents should attend the meeting.

Stay tuned to twitter at the hashtag #AAFPNC for continued updates on the meeting...

#AAFPNC 2012: Day Zero

My adventure for the 2012 AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents & Medical Students has already begun. So, I had morning office hours. And, I knew that I was pushing things a little bit by having office hours. But, it was just that, on the list of patients, there were some folks that I really needed to see and I did not want to cancel their appointments. And naturally, I ran late, because I talk too much and I listen too much. But, that's how I roll as a Family Physician :)

So, I left the office an hour late, and I didn't make my flight - which lead to the picture above at the airport. I was in no hurry today anyway. My flight was reschedued tonight, and I'll still get there in plenty of time for my presentation tomorrow (see video below).

Something I am looking forward to is the Opening Session on Thursday night which has a superhero theme. Dr. Jay Lee has already written an essay talking about "the origin story" in his essay "Our #FMRevolution Olympics Moment." The Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians has raised the superhero bar with the introduction of Captain Pennsylvania (pictured below).

I have boldly predicted that this will be the most social media connected meeting EVAH for medical students and Family Medicine Residents. The twitter stream for the hashtag #AAFPNC is already hopping. In my observation, there is not too much spam on this hashtag - yet. (I warn the AAFP itself in posting too much to its own hashtag. I'm afraid that they'll drive people away and have people create their own "unofficial hashtags." Just saying) As people learn more about the #AAFPNC hashtag, unfortunately, I predict more advertising and spam from exhibit hall vendors and less real communication. Hopefully, I'll be proven wrong on this.

Finally, thanks again to Diana Tucci and Aaron Meyer for being on the podcast last night. Check out Family Medicine Rocks 266 in the player below, or you can download mp3 here. We had an especially great chat about Family Medicine advocacy and why medical students should be involved in advocacy work. I hope to record A LOT of interviews on site (when I finally get there) so that I can bring the meeting out to you. Stay tuned!

FamMedRocks Ep265 Preview

The podcast makes a comeback tonight with guest Dr. Kevin Bernstein who is the Resident Chair of the 2012 AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students. Two years ago, I interviewed Kevin while on the exhibit floor at the 2010 meeting. Then, he was a 4th year medical student and looking forward to his Family Medicine Residency. In the video below, we talked about the significance of the meeting to medical students.

In the video above, you'll see a preview of tonight's show. In addition to my conversation with Kevin, I'll also be talking about my presentation to take place at the meeting which will be about Social Media and Family Medicine. I have also been asked to take part in something called "AAFP Ignite" which is a unique talk where you have 5 minutes, 20 slides, and 15 seconds per slide - all this to tell a story. I hope you can join us tonight, Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 8pm Eastern Time for Family Medicine Rocks Episode 265. See you then!

#AAFPNC: Resident Perspective

In about a week, the 2012 AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students will start. I have already predicted that this will be THE most social media connected meeting EVER for residents and students. Two examples of this are Diana Tucci and Aaron Meyer who are challenging medical students to run their election campaigns on twitter. Very creative.

The video above is a flash from the past from just 2 years ago in 2010. On that podcast, we did a very unique thing and interviewed people live from the convention floor during the meeting. I talked with (then) Family Medicine Resident Dr. Gerry Tolbert about the Opening Night of the meeting which is a big social event. For those of you who will be attending the meeting for the first time, check out the video above. In addition, I invite you to download the entire audio podcast from 2010 right here or listen below. More updates soon...

#AAFPNC 2012: Most Social Student & Resident Mtg Ever

The 2012 AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students will be July 26-28, 2012 in Kansas City, Missouri. This is a meeting that is near and dear to my heart, in this is where I first learned about my specialty and where I met some friends for life.

As has been documented on this blog in the past couple of years, the Family Medicine community has embraced social media as a way to tell the Family Medicine story, to network with peers, and to dream of the future of where health care should go.

In the past few months, the conference organizers (the official twitter hashtag will be #AAFPNC) have used social media platforms like a facebook Page, a twitter handle, and a youtube channel to connect with Family Medicine Resident Physicians and medical students around the country.

I predict that everything will come together in the next 10 days as Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students really start to get excited about the meeting and start using social media to generate some excitement and buzz leading up to next week's meeting.

This blog/website will also do it's part to help let people know about the meeting. I'll also share some memories that I have had with past meetings, and will share my story about how this meeting and this gathering of Famly Medicine advocates - how this really helped to shape my life. Stay tuned....

Physician Social Media Guide

This past week the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) released their Physician Social Media Guide which you see above. They graciously allowed me to look at a draft of the document, which looks pretty good. This initial guide is for what they call "The Big Three" meaning Facebook, Linked-In, and Twitter.

The PAFP has a staff of individuals with a lot of experience in the social media industry. This knowledge base really shows through in this document. They asked me to take a look at it to help frame it for physicians who have little or no experience in social.

So, if you're a physician organization, I encourage you to check out this guide. You can also download the document, but you have to register for the "Issuu" website, which is easy to do. If you have feedback on the document, please leave a comment below, or let me know. I'll certainly forward it along. PAFP is also considering other guides for other social media platforms - I recommend Youtube, Pinterest, and Google Plus next...

Pennsylvania AFP 2012 Summer CME

Thanks so much to the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) for the invitation to speak at their 2012 Summer CME Meeting in Annapolis, Maryland. Of course, I'll be speaking on my favorite topic of Family Medicine and Social Media. The title of the talk is "Physician Social Media: Introduction, Intermediate, and Best Practices."

If you would like an exclusive preview of the talk, the slides are available below to take a look at. You can also download them here or at my slideshare account site. Thanks so much to everyone who has given me feedback on the slides, and what the in-person crowd also gets are a few videos to look at to help further the slide points.

The PAFP is also live video streaming of their Friday CME sessions, which I hope that more Academy state chapters do. However, they are charging $60 for 6 sessions, or $20 for each session, if you would like to purchase individual sessions. It will be interesting to see how popular this option is. Personally, I haven't seen much success with this, but maybe they need to do this in order to offer the CME hours for physicians/providers.

Also on their website, PAFP is going to premier their "Big 3 Initiative" in introducing the "Big 3" social media players (facebook, linkedin, and twitter) to PAFP physician members. I hope to chat with staff about this initiative and offer my assistance, if needed, to help this initiative succeed.

Before heading to Annapolis, I'll be in DC hanging out, and trying to stay out of the heat (supposed to be approaching 110F on Saturday). So, pay attention to my twitter and my facebook feeds. The PAFP meeting hashtag is #Annapolis2012 and I'll be tweeting and following the meeting there. Have a great weekend everybody!
