Ep238 Wrap-Up: Physician Entrepreneur

Thanks again to Dr. Jennifer Dyer for being my guest on Family Medicine Rocks Podcast Episode 238. She is a pediatric endocrinologist, physician scientist and researcher. But, most importantly, she is a Physician Entrepreneur whose vision created the Endogoddess App. We began the interview talking about the basic functions of the app and towards the end of the interview, she talked about some new features that are being worked on (I hope to have that video portion up soon).

In the video above, you'll see our discussion on how it is being a Physician Entrepreneur. She was a full time academic physician including seeing patients on a regular basis. She gave that up to chase her dream of developing and marketing a smartphone app.

Other topics in our interview include her prediction that 2012 will be THE year for mobile health reaching the masses, her thoughts on the new social media platform pinterest, and the recent announcement by Paula Dean having diabetes.

Ep238 Preview: Endogoddess

Join me tonight for Episode 238 of the Family Medicine Rocks podcast when my guest will be Dr. Jennifer Dyer, otherwise known as @Endogoddess on twitter. Not only is she a pediatric endocrinologist, she is a physician entrepreneur in that she developed the Endogoddess app that helps patients manage their diabetes.

In the video above, you see Endogoddess introduce herself before a panel presentation at the 2011 Mayo Clinic Social Media Summit. The Endogoddess app not only helps patients track their blood sugars, it also rewards you for achieving treatment goals with iTunes songs. Ep236 Wrap-up: Kevin Bernstein

Thanks again to Dr. Kevin Bernstein for being my guest on Family Medicine Rocks Podcast Episode 236. He is a first year Family Medicine Resident at the Naval Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. We talked about life as an intern and what that means. We also discussed his recent blog post "Life as a Family Medicine Intern and Social Media Burnout." You'll see part of that chat in the video above.

In addition, we talked about Family Medicine advocacy including the upcoming AAFP committee meeting weekend in February where this will be the first experience of some medical students and residents to organized medicine. We talked about tips to help these new committee members succeed.

Kevin is the Resident Chair of the 2012 AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students which will take place in July. You may remember this video when we chatted during the 2010 edition of the meeting. Man, how time flies. Finally, we talked about the recent events at Penn State University, especially since that is his alma mater.

What #FMRevolution Can Learn From SOPA

All over the internet today, including Wikipedia (shown above), you'll see an online protest. Not only protest, but to raise awareness over the legislation called SOPA and PIPA. The only two links working today on Wikipedia are SOPA and PIPA. I encourage you to read those and check them out. Google also has a good link today to read.

What can #FMRevolution learn? Well, for one thing, not to be (totally) disruptive of the normal course of daily business. One of the amusing tweets today went like this, "Wikipedia is blacked out. How the hell am I supposed to treat patients?"

The point is that if #FMRevolution can get a core group of passionate people together on the internet, say, to talk about the (again) impending Medicare SGR Physician payment cut that is due in 43 days, it just might have an impact.

The effort can be to raise awareness in a creative way to get the attention of our patients. Just a thought. But, I, like a lot of other people will be closely watching if and how today's internet effort to see how it impacts the SOPA and PIPA legislation...

Wound Healing Center

In the video above, you'll see my TV interview from yesterday talking about wound healing centers in general, and specifically, the center at my local hospital. Pretty much everyone knows someone with diabetes and/or circulation problems and this causes even simple cuts and bruises from healing properly.

In addition, people who have had radiation or chemotherapy as cancer treatment, sometimes this causes wounds that are difficult to heal. These treatments are good in that they kill the cancer cells, but sometimes they kill the healthy cells as well.

Ep233 Wrap-Up: Fracking

Thanks to Karl Henkel, Business Reporter for the Youngstown Vindicator newspaper, for being my guest for Family Medicine Rocks Episode 233 last night. (See preview of the show here) We had a great discussion about Fracking, Injection Wells, and Earthquakes.

In the video segment above, he defines the difference between fracking and injection wells. This is important because the former is NOT associated with earthquakes, but the latter is associated with earthquakes. Podcast 233 Preview: Fracking

What the heck is Fracking, and why am I talking about it on this blog? I admit that I did not know anything about this subject until a week ago when a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck about 10 miles from my home. Hydraulic Fracking, or as it is more commonly known, just Fracking, has the potential to have a huge economic boom in this part of the country.

However, as exhibited by last weekend's earthquake, and the 10 other minor tremors last year locally, environmental concerns also question Fracking (and injection wells). And, as I talked about in yesterday's Chronicles blog, the potential to have huge political ramifications.

My guest for Episode 233 of the podcast will be Karl Henkel (pictured above in the video) who is a business reporter from the Youngstown Vindicator newspaper. He has written more than a dozen articles on the subject in the past six months and has been a participant on radio shows talking about this as well.

So, we'll do our best to break things down for you - particularly the difference between Fracking and Injection Wells, with the latter being more of the cause of the local tremors. In fact, Karl tells me that he'll be calling in from a national fracking health forum in Virginia, and maybe we can discuss some potential health related issues as well.
