Out of town weekend

Just wanted to let you know that there is no Doctor Anonymous Show tonight as I will be observing "Earth Hour" by not doing a show tonight - just kidding. Actually, I will be out of town this weekend for some rest and relaxation. Where am I going? Well, you will know if you follow me on twitter. I'll give the updates as I go along.

However, I will be doing a special Monday night edition of The Doctor Anonymous Show from my "undisclosed location" on Monday, March 30th, 2009 at 6pm Eastern Time. I'll be talking about my weekend and also talking about Doctors Day.

If you didn't already know, the HUGE Medbloggers meetup has been finalized. It will be in October and it will be in Las Vegas at Blog World Expo/New Media Expo. This was announced by our buddy Emergiblog yesterday. So, I'll be talking about that as well.

Show 85 Wrap-up

Brandice and Angelo helped me talk through possibly giving a session at this year's Podcamp Ohio. In medical blogging and podcasting, patient privacy issues are something that is always talked about with my friends and colleagues in the industry. Angelo also gave some suggestions about possibly talking about health and medicine information resources out there on the internet. With regards to Podcamp, Angelo gave some updates on sessions, registration, and lodging for the event.

To close out the show tonight, I talked about this story entitled "Natasha's lesson help saves Ohio girl." This is the last 10 minutes of the show where I give some commentary on this story. I'll also try to put up a video post on this coming up soon.

Just FYI, there will be no Saturday night show as I will be out of town. Where am I going? Well, keep track of my on Twitter and you will get some clues there. In addition, I am considering doing a special Monday night show from on location from where I'm at. As I have talked about before, Monday, March 30th will be National Doctors Day. Dr. A Show 85: Podcamp Ohio

Tonight, The Doctor Anonymous Show will be talking Podcamp Ohio. And, we will be doing something unique on the show. I need your help, because I'm thinking about doing a session at this year's event. The only idea that I have is that it will be related to medicine and new media. Other than that, the possibilities are endless.

My guest will be our buddy Brandice who has her own website and a very popular podcast called STeaP which is centered around the topic of tea. In addition to talk about her projects, I'm going to have her help me brainstorm about doing a session at this year's Podcamp.

Weird

Over the past few weeks, I've been using Facebook as a video sharing site for the show. Everything has been going great until tonight when I'm looking at my blog page and all I see is "Video Unavailable." That's not good. I hope that it is a temporary thing. I have the "privacy" settings so that "everybody" can see them. So, let me know, can you see any of the videos that I have recently posted? If not, then I may have to find another video sharing site. Yeesh.

Show 85 Preview

On this week's Doctor Anonymous Show, I'm going to do something that I have never done before on the show. That's right, I'm asking you - the devoted Doctor Anonymous listener and reader of the blog - to help me create a presentation which I will give at PodCamp Ohio 2.

We'll be talking Podcamp Ohio this week on the show. Our good friend Brandice from Brandice.Net will join me and we will throw around ideas for a possible medicine/healthcare/new media talk to take place June 20, 2009 in Columbus, Ohio at this year's Podcamp Ohio. We'll also get and update on the event as well as talking with Brandice about her website and other projects.

What the heck should I talk about? How would you want a medicine & new media talk to go at an event like this? The possibilities are endless. National Doctor's Day

In case you didn't know, National Doctor's Day is March 30th. Information from Wikipedia shows the following about the day:

The first Doctors Day observance was March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. This first observance included the mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors Day.

On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctors Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctors Day. Following overwhelming approval by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, on October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 (which became Public Law 101-473) designating March 30th as "National Doctors Day."

In the video above, I describe something that my hospital is doing this year. It's kind of funny, but there is a ballot that is floating through the hospital asking people to vote in particular categories like the following: Easiest to Call at 2am, Most Appreciative, Best Handwriting, Best Jokes, etc.

Thanks so much to Trauma Junkie for being a guest on the show. His blog is called "Surviving RT School" - meaning respiratory therapy school. We talked about his passion and interest in respiratory therapy and why he chose that career in the medical field. We also talked about the training process for RT - which I admit I didn't know much about.

We also discussed the blog carnival which he created called "A Source of Inspiration." This carnival highlights respiratory therapy and they have already had one edition that has been posted. The second edition is due at the end of the month with the deadline for blog post submissions is around March 27th.

Show 84 Preview

Here is an excerpt from a recent post from his blog talking about the use of cell phones in the hospital....

We've all been there. There is nothing more annoying than stepping into a room to assess your patient, administer a medication, or carry out an order, and just as you have everything set up to do what you need to do, RRRRINNNNGGG. "Yeah, um, I'm gonna have to take this. Can you come back in a minute?"

Sometimes I do, and to be honest, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I tell the patient that if I do not do this now, I won't be able to come back for a few hours, and I will have to chart their refusal. It sounds rude, but sometimes you just have to do things like that. A few thoughts come to mind when a patient feels their phone call is more important than the "acute" care they are receiving in the hospital:

1. They really aren't very sick
2. They really aren't very smart
3. They really aren't very nice

And of course, any combination of the three. You see, it's all about the patient having their rights, and I totally understand that. If they have to talk to a husband from Iraq, that's okay. If their But at the same time, patients should understand that they have been admitted to the hospital for urgent, around the clock care, because a doctor has deemed it necessary.

However, as much as this pushes my buttons (and I hope you can just feel my anger), the newest thing I have observed is not only the patients talking on their cell phone, but...

The doctor? Yes, the doctor.
