Weird

Over the past few weeks, I've been using Facebook as a video sharing site for the show. Everything has been going great until tonight when I'm looking at my blog page and all I see is "Video Unavailable." That's not good. I hope that it is a temporary thing. I have the "privacy" settings so that "everybody" can see them. So, let me know, can you see any of the videos that I have recently posted? If not, then I may have to find another video sharing site. Yeesh.

Show 85 Preview

On this week's Doctor Anonymous Show, I'm going to do something that I have never done before on the show. That's right, I'm asking you - the devoted Doctor Anonymous listener and reader of the blog - to help me create a presentation which I will give at PodCamp Ohio 2.

We'll be talking Podcamp Ohio this week on the show. Our good friend Brandice from Brandice.Net will join me and we will throw around ideas for a possible medicine/healthcare/new media talk to take place June 20, 2009 in Columbus, Ohio at this year's Podcamp Ohio. We'll also get and update on the event as well as talking with Brandice about her website and other projects.

What the heck should I talk about? How would you want a medicine & new media talk to go at an event like this? The possibilities are endless. So, join me and Brandice on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 9pm Eastern Time on BlogTalkRadio as we talk about this any other topics. Hope to see you for the show. (Don't forget to check out the video post above)

National Doctor's Day

In case you didn't know, National Doctor's Day is March 30th. Information from Wikipedia shows the following about the day:
The first Doctors Day observance was March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. This first observance included the mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors Day.

On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctors Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctors Day. Following overwhelming approval by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, on October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 (which became Public Law 101-473) designating March 30th as "National Doctors Day."

In the video above, I describe something that my hospital is doing this year. It's kind of funny, but there is a ballot that is floating through the hospital asking people to vote in particular categories like the following: Easiest to Call at 2am, Most Appreciative, Best Handwriting, Best Jokes, etc.

Just curious, but is your hospital doing anything to commemorate this day? Let me know by sharing your comments below. Don't forget to your favorite (and maybe not so fave) physician on their day. Happy Doctor's Day!

Update: I apologize for not having the video above not working. When I first posted this, Facebook was allowing people to see the video, and now not so much. I did set the privacy settings to "everyone." But, that didn't work. Maybe they mean "everyone" logged into Facebook. Anyway, I'm going to upload the video to another site and repost here when available.

Show 84 Wrap-up

Thanks so much to Trauma Junkie for being a guest on the show. His blog is called "Surviving RT School" - meaning respiratory therapy school. We talked about his passion and interest in respiratory therapy and why he chose that career in the medical field. We also talked about the training process for RT - which I admit I didn't know much about.

We also discussed the blog carnival which he created called "A Source of Inspiration." This carnival highlights respiratory therapy and they have already had one edition that has been posted. The second edition is due at the end of the month with the deadline for blog post submissions is around March 27th.

After the interview, the Rev. RockDog called into the show to talk about his role in last week's Annie and Burl Live show and previewing this week's show. Mother Jones called in to discuss my recent activity on facebook. I encourage you to check out the show in the player above, or you can download the show here. Also check out the video post above. Thanks for your continued support for the show. I appreciate it!

Join The Doctor Anonymous Show this week where our guest will be the blogger named Trauma Junkie. His blog is called "Surviving RT School." We'll be discussing this and also the new blog carnival called "A Source of Inspiration" which highlights respiratory therapy.

Here is an excerpt from a recent post from his blog talking about the use of cell phones in the hospital....

We've all been there. There is nothing more annoying than stepping into a room to assess your patient, administer a medication, or carry out an order, and just as you have everything set up to do what you need to do, RRRRINNNNGGG. "Yeah, um, I'm gonna have to take this. Can you come back in a minute?"

Sometimes I do, and to be honest, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I tell the patient that if I do not do this now, I won't be able to come back for a few hours, and I will have to chart their refusal. It sounds rude, but sometimes you just have to do things like that. A few thoughts come to mind when a patient feels their phone call is more important than the "acute" care they are receiving in the hospital:

1. They really aren't very sick
2. They really aren't very smart
3. They really aren't very nice

And of course, any combination of the three. You see, it's all about the patient having their rights, and I totally understand that. If they have to talk to a husband from Iraq, that's okay. If their But at the same time, patients should understand that they have been admitted to the hospital for urgent, around the clock care, because a doctor has deemed it necessary.

However, as much as this pushes my buttons (and I hope you can just feel my anger), the newest thing I have observed is not only the patients talking on their cell phone, but...

The doctor? Yes, the doctor.

So, I invite you to check out the show (where we'll talk about this post, his blog, and his blog carnival) on Thursday, March 19th, 2009 at 9pm Eastern Time on BlogTalkRadio for The Doctor Anonymous Show. Can't catch the show live? Well, that's ok. Every show is made into a podcast where you can download later and listen anytime. See you for the show!

Back in the day

This week, I've been going through some old video tapes and found this news report. Back in September 2004, I was asked to take part in a news conference to educate the community about the medical liability crisis in this part of the state. This meeting was put together by our three local county medical societies. We also wanted to get the word out on the state supreme court candidates our groups were supporting during that election cycle. The cool thing for me was that there were about 3-4 other panelists, but who got the sound bytes on the news? Cool, huh.

Show 83 Wrap-up

Over the weekend was "The Night Shift" with Dr. A and Kat. We talked a little news like the latest in the Anna Nicole case. I shared that I'm gonna be on local news for a 3 minute health segment on Monday afternoon. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and I'll be discussing that on Monday afternoon. Kat shared a story about a ghost in her house - Hmm. Finally, there was a short comedy bit about having a "call screener" for the show. You can listen to the show on the player above. Or, you can download the show here. Also, enjoy the video post above. Happy Monday!

Show 82 Wrap-up

Thanks so much to MudPhudder for being my guest on Show 82. We talked about his path to medical school and graduate school. It's always great hearing why choose the career path that they choose. He also explained some of the training process for MD/PhD students. (You can listen to the show on the player above or download the show here.)

His graduate school work was in immunology and he explained very well what that is for those who are unfamiliar. We also talked about his experience with the residency interview process. Sure, there are flaws, and MP talked about them. How to improve the process? That's the tough part. We also talked about how you answer this question - "What makes you a better applicant for this residency program verses someone else?"

Finally, we talked about his fabulous blog. His blogroll is full of academic and research blogs. I always enjoy checking out other blogrolls in that they help expose to me subjects that I may not know much about. Finally, MP and I answered a callers question about an interesting topic. You'll have to listen to the show to find out what that was. How did we handle the caller? Let us know. (Also don't forget to check out the video post above)

Don't forget to join us on Saturday, March 14th at 9pm Eastern Daylight Time for "The Night Shift with Dr. A." My co-host Kat and I will talk about interesting news stories (to me). And, who knows what else will come up? Have a great weekend and see you for The Night Shift!
